Only Happy When It Rains

Story Notes: It’s Prom time, and Angel’s broken Buffy’s heart. Who else but her White Knight to go talk to him???

Disclaimer and stuff: I own nothing. All the characters and stuff are owned by the all mighty Joss Whedon, yada, yada. The title comes from the extremely good Garbage song, “Only Happy When it Rains” as do the lyrics. Only the plot is mine. Also, this would take place during the Prom episode, my guess is the night before.

Xander drove up to the mansion in silence. His Uncle was still letting him use the car, even though in a place like Sunnydale, Xander had decided you didn’t need one very much. Tonight, on the other hand, he did.

Rain was just starting to fall heavy as he pulled up to the mansion, and he cut the engine. Shoving his keys into his pocket, Xander jumped out of the car, and sprinted to the overhang in front of the door. He personally didn’t like the idea of getting sick right before Prom, even if Anya of all people was his date.

Thinking of Prom made Xander think of Buffy . . . and the cry fest he had pounced upon accidentally that day. He had come over to Buffy’s after receiving word Willow was there, and Mrs. Summers directed him upstairs, saying she thought Buffy wasn’t in too good of a mood. Thinking the King of Cretins could make her smile, he wasn’t prepared for the site he saw. He had never seen Buffy look so tiny, and helpless; not when Angelus returned, not when her powers were taken away. She was sobbing wildly, her head in Willow’s lap, who was stroking her hair, and trying to make her feel better. It wasn’t working.

Xander didn’t stay too long, just until Buffy had managed to get her emotions in some kind of check, and he found out what was wrong. After that, he was waiting for sunset. DeadBoy had one hell of a talk coming from him.

Xander didn’t hesitate at knocking on the door. Well, pounding would be a better term. Ever since Angel had come back to the home team, Xander hadn’t been scared of DeadBoy. Hell, he had never really been scared of Angelus. He had only been scared of what he might do to his friends.

“Xander,” Angel said in a surprised tone after opening the door.

“Ya noticed, how thoughtful,” Xander replied dryly. “Can I come in, or do I need to take my outdoor shower first?”

“No, c-come in,” Angel said, pulling the door open wider to let the teenager step through. “I just, you don’t usually come here. What do you want?”

“What do I want? Right now, I want to tell you off, repeatedly shoot you with my boom stick, and watch your head get in the line of fire of a flame-thrower,” Xander told him in a casual tone as he pulled off his jacket.

“I love your tact,” Angel retorted, walking into the living room, Xander in tow.

“Yeah well, I guess I dated Cordy for too long,” Xander kept the light tone in his voice. “Or perhaps I’m going all White Knight on you again.”

Angel winced, memories of when he had given Xander that title flooding his mind. “Look Xander, I thought this was over with . . .”

“Oh, that is. I never wanted to kill you for what you did to me,” Xander informed him as Angel walked to the fireplace. “It was what you did to everyone else.”

“Is there a point here, Xander? I’m not in the mood for this,” Angel said, a cold note coming to his voice as he stared into the flames.

“Not in the mood!? Oh, of course not, you’re too busy wrecking girls’ hopes and dreams aren’t you?” Xander asked, the bitterness shooting through his words.

Angel shook his head. “I should have known.”

“What? That I would be pissed off at you for breaking up with Buffy just days before the Prom?! Hell yes, I am!”

“Why? I thought you wanted nothing more than for us to be apart?” Angel shot back, finally turning around to face him.

“God, you’re so dense! I didn’t know thoughts not reflecting in your mind meant there weren’t any smart ones in there!” Xander burst out. “I thought you would’ve realized, I had stopped that. Done, over with. All I want is Buffy happy! Even if . . . if you’re the one who makes her that way.”

“You really love her,” Angel commented after a tense silence had settled. It wasn’t a question.

“I have for a long time, DeadBoy,” Xander replied. “I just didn’t have a chance to show it too well.”

“And now’s your chance. So why are you here, yelling at me?”

“Because, I realized a while ago I didn’t make the grade with Buff. I’m her White Knight, but the shining armor goes to you,” Xander told him. “If I can’t make her happy, I want her to be with who does.”

“I can’t be with her Xander. So go. Take the armor, and ride on your white horse!” Angel said. “I’m not going to do it anymore.”

Xander slowly walked over to Angel, saying nothing. He stared at him for a minute, before throwing the hardest punch he could, connecting with Angel’s jaw. He heard the crunch of bone as Angel stumbled back, and wondered if it was Angel’s jaw, or his hand breaking. He grabbed his hand, cradling it in silent pain, and watching in satisfaction as Angel hit the floor, holding his jaw.

“That . . . my friend, is for hurting her. That is for not being the good guy, and never starting the love crap back up again. That is for being a selfish bastard, and for having the worst timing on God’s green Earth . . . and for our little conversation in the hospital.”

Still cradling his hand, though now knowing it wasn’t crushed into little pieces, Xander grabbed his jacket, and started out of the mansion, personally feeling a helluva lot better.

Xander slid into the driver’s seat, turning the engine on. He flipped on the radio as he waited for the feeling to return to his hand.

// I’m only happy when it rains
I’m only happy it’s complicated
and though I know you can’t appreciate it
I’m only happy when it rains
you know I love it when the news is bad
and why it feels so good to feel so sad
I’m only happy when it rains
pour your misery down
pour your misery down on me pour your misery down
pour your misery down on me//

Xander repressed the urge to laugh. “Whaddya know? DeadBoy’s theme song.”

// I’m only happy when it rains
I feel so good when things go wrong
I only listen to the sad sad songs
I’m only happy when it rains
I only smile in the dark
my only comfort is the night gone black
I didn’t accidentally tell you that//

//I’m only happy when it rains
you’ll get the message by the time I’m through
when I complain about me and you
I’m only happy when it rains//

Xander finally let a bitter laugh fall as he put the car into gear, and started to drive away. “Too bad DeadBoy ain’t listening to this . . .”

//I’m only happy when it rains
you wanna hear about my new obsession
I’m riding high upon a deep depression
I’m only happy when it rains//

//pour some misery down on me
I’m only happy when it rains
pour some misery down on me
I’m only happy when it rains
pour some misery down on me
I’m only happy when it rains
pour some misery down on me
I’m only happy when it rains . . .//
